Fiercely defying easy (read: pitchable) categorization, Schneider has been called everything from a “soft, folkish lounge” singer (and this was in 1985!) to a neo-country artist-in-waiting. Through it all, the former punk-rock bassist says she still considers herself a classic AM-radio-inspired pop songwriter, and is sick of hearing from low-level music business executives who feel otherwise. However, this 1991 release shows her to be ahead of many trends, from the “no-depression” country/rock movement, to the self-aware women’s music movement (as exemplified by Lillith Fair, and the current success of Ani DiFranco). Her latest self-labeling effort: insurgent lounge. Yep, that oughta just about cover it.
